MR ALAN HUNTER

Career History

Alan Hunter is 39 years old (D.O.B.20.6.61). Alan was called to the NI Bar in 1984 and practiced for 4 years before joining the Office of Legislative Counsel in 1988, drafting primary legislation. In 1990 Alan joined the Northern Ireland Court Service taking forward initiatives such as county court procedural reforms, enacting new juries legislation and the new fixed penalty and penalty points scheme. In 1998 Alan was appointed Head of Legal Aid Branch to Take forward the Lord Chancellor's Legal Aid Reform agenda and with the Law Society improve performance in the Legal Aid Department. He was appointed Director of Legal Aid on 1 December 2000 after holding that position on a temporary basis since July 2000. Alan spends his spare time reading, entertaining friends and enjoying water sports on the North Atlantic coast with his family and friends.

Job Outline

The Director of Legal Aid is a new post in the Court Service and has strategic responsibility for: Legal Aid Reform; Formulating and implementing legal aid policy initiatives; Legal aid expenditure and administration; Overseeing the Law Society in the administration of legal aid; Providing secretariat services to the Lord Chancellor's Legal Aid Advisory Committee.
