Vidhu Vedalankar was appointed chief executive officer of the Legal Aid board of South Africa in December 2002. Vidhu, who hails from KwaZulu-Natal, holds a master's degree in Town and Regional planning from the University of Natal. She has extensive experience in the fields of development, strategic planning, management and restructuring. She has successfully managed sizeable organisations delivering municipal services to the public. She started her working life in the eighties in the NGO movement assisting civics in their day-to-day battles with government. She worked as a planner in the early nineties, moving on to work for the DFR Development Forum, which brought together statutory and non-statutory organisations in preparation for democratic local government. The Durban City Council appointed her the Director of Housing in January 1995. In 1996 she served in the Durban Metropolitan Council as the Acting Executive Director of Housing. The following year, 1997, she was promoted to the position of the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, and in 1999 as CEO of the Durban Central Local Council. In 1999, she was appointed as Unicity Project Manager to manage the transformation process of preparing for the formation of the Durban Metro in the period post local government elections in December 2000. In 2001/2002 she worked as a development consultant until she was appointed as the CEO of the Legal Aid Board South Africa. |
