Judge Smyth was educated at Methodist College, Belfast and Queen's University, Belfast. He was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1972, taking Silk in 1988. He was also called to the English Bar in 1976 and Irish Bar in 1988. In March 1990 he was appointed as a county court judge. The following year he was appointed Chairman of the Lord Chancellor's Legal Aid Advisory Committee. Judge Smyth has particular interests in a range of issues including Restorative Justice (he was a founder member of the Northern Ireland Working Party on Restorative Justice and of the Northern Ireland Office Steering Group on Restorative Justice) and Drug Strategies (he was involved in negotiations between the Department of Health and the Northern Ireland Office in relation to the setting up of an effective drug strategy in Northern Ireland). Judge Smyth is married with 3 children. |
