Dr John Hamill is a Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Justice in New Zealand. John is currently responsible for a number of policy projects including legal aid, Coroners and Justices of the Peace. John is the project leader on the review of eligibility for legal aid being undertaken by the Ministry of Justice. This review is the second stage of reforms if legal aid in New Zealand. The first stage involved the establishment of a new independent Agency to administer legal aid - the Legal Services Agency.

John has previously worked as a policy team leader and Senior Policy Advisor for the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, and was responsible for policy on qualifications and quality assurance in education. While working as the Senior Advisor and team leader at the Qualifications Authority he was responsible for the policy framework for establishing the Register of Quality Assured Qualifications in New Zealand and was involved in international benchmarking of qualifications systems.

John has a Masters Degree and Doctorate in English Literature from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, and was a lecturer and tutor at Victoria University before joining the public service in 1998.
