Michelle Adkins

Michelle Adkins is the Director of the Legal Aid Directorate within the Department of Justice Canada. Over the last two years, she has led the development of Canada's Legal Aid Renewal Strategy, which focuses on addressing unmet needs in criminal legal aid. Prior to joining the federal legal aid team, Michelle was Senior Policy Advisor to the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Indian Affairs. During her tenure with Minister Stewart she provided direction and advice on the development of Gathering Strength, the federal government's response to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. Michelle was also responsible for developing and implementing an extensive nation-wide Aboriginal consultation process on the Firearms Act for Justice Canada. Michelle is a candidate for a Masters of Laws, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. She already has a Bachelor of Laws from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario and a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) from University of Victoria. Michelle is currently a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada.
